Students from Southern Oak Elementary in Seminole also participated, and the winners will be announced there on Feburary 17th. Over 100 children total from both schools participated, with a total of six 1st place winners (three from each school). The posters were judged at Clearwater Garden Club General Meeting on January 8th, and the winning posters are being sent along to District VIII for judging at the district level.
The Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl Annual Poster Competition was established to help teachers and other educators and parents educate young people on the important topics of fire safety and environmental responsibility. National Garden Clubs has worked in conjunction with National Forest Service on this project for many years. Posters are judged by each local garden club, submitted for district judging, and then on to state and national levels of competition. Monetary prizes are awarded at the state and national levels for the winners, and the national winner of the competition is flown with up to three other family members to Washington D.C. for the check presentation. The winning poster is used in billboards and on marketing and educational materials all throughout that year.
