Unveiling of the Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker

Members of Clearwater Garden Club had the privilege of recognizing the service provided by the men and women of our Armed Forces, as they unveiled the Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker Sunday afternoon on the Clearwater Memorial Causeway in Clearwater.

Young members of Clearwater Composite Squadron of Civil Air Patrol presented the colors, and Florida Federation of Garden Club President (FFGC) Sue Angle was on hand as an honored guest to read a poem about the gratitude of this nation to those who serve in our military.

Betty Call, FFGC State Blue Star Marker Chairman, shared a brief history of the Blue Star Marker Program that was founded by National Garden Clubs after WWII.

Mayor Cretekos honored everyone present with a heartfelt speech about the importance of remembering the past and memorializing those who have come before us as it was their dedication and devotion to freedom which has allowed us to prosper in relative peace, and freedom to this day. "It is fitting," he said, "that this is one of Clearwater's Centennial events." He shared the importance of what we as a people do in our time on those who will follow in our footsteps.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of several Veteran's Posts, and by City Manager Bill Horne, a retired military officer as well.

The ceremony was also attended by dignitaries from MacDill AFB who presented the flag in a moving silent tribute to all of those who have given their lives in defence of this nation, and was closed with the playing of Taps.
