Young People are Our Future, Our Hope

Members of Clearwater Garden Club enjoyed a wonderful morning of art and creativity at Southern Oaks Elementary during the Great American Teach-In. CGC President, Alice Jarvis, shared the story of Smokey Bear, and reminded the children that we are all stewards of the Earth in big and small ways. Five other members joined her for this important outreach event.

Students were encouraged to use their creativity and art skills to develop posters featuring either Smokey Bear or Woodsy Owl which will be judged by members of CGC during the January program. All students will receive a certificate of participation, and a winner from each grade level will receive a prize.

"Young people are our future," Alice shared, "You are all winners, and don't ever forget that. You are all winners," she told them. The students each received other age-appropriate materials which had been provided by the National Forest Service, including coloring books, comic books, bookmarks, and activity books.

The winning posters from CGC will go onto the FFGC to be judged at the state level, and Florida will submit one winner from each grade level. Students who win at the national level are treated to a trip for four to Washington D.C., and also receive a monetary prize.
